So you're building a new house or improving an old one, and the topic of electric wiring has come up. You wonder what all this electrical plan mumbo jumbo is about, and why it's so important to have one. I'm here to talk about what it is, why you need it, and how to make sure that your electrician hires an engineer who knows what they are doing. Plus, we'll share some helpful tips to keep in mind when designing your very own electrical plan.

What is an electrical plan?

An electrical plan is a detailed blueprint that outlines the layout and specifications of an electrical system within a building, be it a residential or commercial space. It is also known as technical drawings, wiring diagram or electrical drawings. This comprehensive document covers everything from the location of outlets and switches to the routing of cables and the types of circuit breakers needed. By providing a clear roadmap for the installation and maintenance of electrical components, an electrical plan ensures that your project is safe, efficient, up to code and makes the building process more seamless.

What do they look like?

Electrical plans are typically presented in two formats: as sketch drawings or as technical drawings. Sketch drawings show how outlets, switches, fixtures, and other components will be arranged within the space while technical drawings detail precise measurements such as cable lengths or hole sizes. In addition to these two options, most companies offer a third option: 3D renderings which allow you to see exactly how your project will look in its final form without having to spend any time on site during construction. So, when we talk about electrical plans, we refer to the accurate technical drawings and is also what other builders and trades refer to.

Who needs one?

Electrical plans are required by most local municipalities for all new residential projects regardless of size. They are also required for commercial projects but only if they exceed certain thresholds laid out in local laws (these thresholds can vary by municipality). Electrical plans are also required for remodelling projects that exceed a certain dollar amount, again depending on local laws.

Why do I need an electrical plan?

You might be wondering, "Why do I even need an electrical plan?" Well, there are several important reasons:

  • Safety: Electrical planning ensures that your building's electrical system is designed with safety in mind, reducing the risk of electrical fires, shocks, or other hazards.

  • Efficiency: A well-designed electrical plan maximizes the efficiency of your electrical system, which can help reduce energy consumption and save on utility bills.

  • Code Compliance: Adhering to an electrical plan ensures your project meets local, national, and international building codes and regulations, avoiding potential fines and penalties.

  • Future-Proofing and Upgrades: Proper electrical planning takes into account potential future upgrades or expansions, making it easier to accommodate changes down the line. If you plan on adding any features to your home in the future, like an extra TV point or smart appliances, your electrical plan can include the appropriate wiring and outlets for the new features. It’s also important to note that if you plan on selling your home, an electrical plan can help you get a more accurate appraisal of your home’s value

  • Ease of Maintenance: With a comprehensive electrical plan, troubleshooting and maintenance become more manageable, as technicians can quickly identify the components and layout of your electrical system. This will also save you on added costs.

What is included in an electrical plan?

An electrical plan typically covers the following elements:

  • Circuit Design and Layout: The plan details the arrangement of electrical circuits, specifying the types and locations of components such as switches, outlets, and light fixtures.

  • Technical description: A summary and legend of products to be installed will be included in the electrical plan.

  • Load Calculations: It provides information on the total electrical demand of your building and how that demand is distributed across circuits.

  • Wiring and Connection Methods: The plan outlines the appropriate wiring and connection techniques, ensuring a safe and efficient electrical system.

  • Safety and Protection Systems: Your electrical plan will include critical safety measures, such as grounding, surge protection, and arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs).

  • Compliance with Codes and Regulations: The plan is designed to adhere to applicable electrical codes and regulations, ensuring your project is safe and up to standard.

Tips to consider when designing your electrical plan

Now that you know the basics of electrical planning, here are some tips to help you create an efficient and safe electrical plan:

  1. Collaborate with Professionals: Consult with experienced electricians or engineers to ensure your plan meets the necessary safety standards and complies with applicable codes and regulations.

  2. Consider Your Needs: Evaluate your current and future electrical needs to create a plan that accommodates your lifestyle and potential changes in technology or usage patterns.

  3. Prioritize Energy Efficiency: Integrate energy-efficient solutions, such as LED lighting and smart home technology, to minimize energy consumption and reduce your environmental impact.

  4. Plan for Safety: Ensure your electrical plan includes proper grounding, surge protection, and arc fault circuit interrupters to protect your home or building from electrical hazards.

  5. Keep Maintenance in Mind: Design your plan with ease of maintenance in mind, allowing for straightforward access to essential components and clear labelling of components.

In the end, there's a lot to think about with regard to residential electrical plans. But if you want to avoid problems down the road, it's best to start early. If you're thinking of building a new home, speak with a electrician early on about designing not only your foundation, but also preparing your electrical plan as well. For existing homes, speak with an electrician to see if there are any areas of concern in your home that need a little extra TLC.
