Light is the new black. We're using it to style our spaces, customize our homes, and even change our moods. Here's a look at some of the biggest trends in lighting for 2023 that will be everywhere as well as what trends are out.

cosy home design with soft lighting

Lighting is one of the easiest ways to make a room feel new and exciting, but it's also one of the most overlooked. Whether you're in the process of designing a new home or looking to add some visual interest with table lamps, there are plenty of new styles we can expect to see this year.

Deep recessed lighting is in.

In 2023, glare-free lighting is all the rage. Recessed lighting is a great way to light a room and reduce glare in your home as they are embedded in the ceiling. Recessed lights are hidden and light the rooms more evenly. Recessed lighting can be used anywhere in your home and in a variety of spaces. Homeowners usually opt for recessed lights in kitchens, living rooms, and closets and is used as a form of task lighting however it can be used to highlight architectural features or artwork on walls. We love this trend as it creates a sleek look with no exposed cords or bulbs (which is also out) but it also works well in traditional homes. There are many different types of styles of recessed lights so this is a trend that can work for anyone!

Our favourite style of downlights are deep recessed lights as they sit higher up into the ceiling and the surrounding trim is deeper compared to normal recessed down lights. These provide even less glare and are less visible when viewing the downlight. They are perfect for when there are lower ceilings as they give the illusion of higher ceilings. Gold star from us!

Glary down lights are out.

Downlights are great for task lighting, but they're not always the best option for every room in your home as certain downlights can produce an awful lot of glare. They create shadows that make it difficult to see certain areas of a room and are not very flattering. In bedrooms and living rooms where ambient light is important, downlights may not be the best choice as they can create harsh shadows and make the room feel uninviting. If you do want to use glary down lights in these spaces, opt for low glare options that diffuse more light across a broader area of space than standard bulbs do.

To find the best low glare downlights, look for bulbs that are labelled “low glare.” These bulbs typically use a diffuser lens to spread light across a larger area than standard bulbs do. If you can't find low glare downlights at your local hardware store.

Another option is to add a dimmer switch to your low-glare downlight. A dimmer switch can help diffuse the light and minimize glare by adjusting the brightness of bulbs.

Smart lighting is in.

If you're not familiar with smart lighting, it's technology that allows homeowners to control their lights remotely via a smartphone or voice commands. These systems can be integrated with other smart home devices like thermostats and security systems. Smart lighting is also extremely convenient as it allows you to control your lights from anywhere, at any time. You can turn lights on or off, dim them, or change their colour temperature all from your smartphone or tablet. This means you can adjust your lights even if you're not at home, providing added security and convenience. Smart lighting can also be scheduled and programmed to turn on and off at set times throughout the day or week; this is great for when you want your house to feel occupied while you're away on vacation but don't want to pay for electricity 24/7.

Smart lighting can be used to create specific moods or atmospheres in your home. For example, if you're having a relaxing evening with friends and family, you might want to dim the lights and turn on some soft music which can all be controlled via your phone. Or if you're in the mood for a more romantic atmosphere straight out of The Notebook, simply dims the lights and sets the colour temperature to a warm, cosy hue.

Over illumination are out - Ambient lighting is in.

Gone are the days where a home is filled with rows and rows of stark bright downlights. This year is all about soft and ambient lighting. Ambient lighting is a good way to create a mood or atmosphere in a room. It’s more subtle than direct lighting and creates an even spread of light across your space, rather than a focus on one area or item. You can achieve ambient lighting with indirect lighting by using lamps, pendants or sconces and also by light bouncing off walls and ceilings.

Here are examples of ambient-style lights:

  • Recessed lighting: Recessed lighting can be used in kitchens, bathrooms and any other place where you want a clean look. It’s also ideal for accent lighting because it's focused on a specific area of your home. Recessed lights are easy to install and don't require any additional wiring or power source.

  • Over head lighting: If you have an extra large entryway or living room, consider hanging a chandelier ion the centre of the room or along a hall way. They can be hung anywhere because they don't take up much room when they're not being used—this makes them perfect for larger rooms where space might otherwise be limited by other fixtures or furniture pieces that need clearance from each other (like nightstands).

  • Wall sconces: Wall sconces can be used to provide ambient lighting in any room. They provides light without cluttering up the ceiling. The bonus of using wall sconces is that they can be placed at different levels which creates different lighting effects. They can be directed at the walls, creating a soft and even light that will fill the room or lower to the floor to accentuate the walkway.

  • LED strip lighting: LED strip lights are very low profile and can be easily hidden under cabinetry or tucked into tight spaces This allows you to create ambient lighting without compromising the aesthetic of the room. LED strip lighting is also extremely flexible and can be cut to fit any space. This makes it ideal for use in rooms with irregular shapes or for highlighting specific features such as artwork or architectural elements.

Statement lighting is in.

Statement lighting is having a moment on its own (especially the 'lamp chandelier' look). Over-scale chandeliers will be a focus this year as it’s considered a floating work of art. The statement light fixture is one of the easiest ways to make an impact in any space, and there are so many options out there! The best way to approach a chandelier is to think about the size of your space and what type of light you want. If your design aesthetic is modern and sleek, then a minimal chandelier would be ideal.

Layered Lighting is in.

There is no longer one-size fits all approach when it comes to lighting. In the past, lighting was mostly about putting light in all areas of your home with no extra thought on the space or function of the home. Today, however, lighting is about creating layers that are tailored to various tasks and moods throughout your entire property. This means that you may have different types of lamps or bulbs in different rooms depending on what activities you're doing at each location.

The layered approach is becoming increasingly popular as homeowners seek out ways they can create more dynamic spaces while also saving energy costs through smarter design choices (i.e., using natural light whenever possible).

Whatever kind of look you want to achieve within your space in 2023, these trendy lighting solutions should definitely be kept in mind when decorating/renovating your home - from modern accents to energy-saving solutions - so go ahead and get creative!
